Exploring a Dog's Umwelt | Designing for Coexistence

Embodied Movement for Multispecies Empathy: Rethinking Design Through Non-Human Perspectives

ISEA2025 | Nabi Media Art School & Seoul Museum of Art | Special Track: Barriers and Alienation in Art × Tech Education

Seoul, South Korea | May 27, 2025

This workshop explored multispecies design by inviting participants to shift from human-centered approaches toward designing through the perceptual world (Umwelt) of non-human species—in this case, dogs.

Participants engaged in embodied movement exercises and sensory tools (dichromatic lenses simulating dog vision, tactile materials) to better understand how dogs interact with their environments.

The session combined:

Preliminary design exercises

Movement-based sensory exploration

Iterative design refinement

The goal was to foster critical reflection on anthropocentric biases and to equip designers, artists, and researchers with tools for developing more thoughtful, species-appropriate design strategies. This workshop was part of the ISEA2025 special track on Art and Technology Education and was hosted at Nabi Media Art School and the Seoul Museum of Art.
