CARBON FARM | Algae Bioplastic Design
Carbon Farm is an interactive art installation that invites participants to explore their relationship with the atmosphere, climate change, and non-human living systems. Developed by Jiabao Li and Ben J. Evanson, with algae bioplastic design contributions from Ceren Özgen, Siyu Fang, and Maya Kotsovolos, the project captures CO₂ from human breath and speech, transforming it into biodegradable algae-based bioplastics.
The installation encourages personal reflection on carbon emissions by allowing participants to speak or breathe into a specialized CO₂ collector, which measures real-time emissions and translates them into algae growth. The collected CO₂ undergoes a Direct Air Carbon Capture and Sequestration (DACCS) process, where it is trapped, concentrated, and converted into nutrition for thriving algae cultures. This algae is then harvested and processed into eco-friendly bioplastics, uniquely made from each participant's contribution.
